Things to Do in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

  1. Gorilla Trekking:

Information

Permit Cost: USD $800 per person (as of 2025)

Age Limit: Minimum 15 years

Fitness Level: Moderate to high (trekking conditions can be demanding)

Packing Tips: Good hiking boots, rain jacket, gloves, long sleeves, snacks, and water

Best time to Visit : June to September  and December to February (Dry Seasons) . Trekking is still possible in March to May and October to November (rainy seasons) with challenging trekking but few tourists and better photography lighting due to overcast skies.

    • The Journey Begins Your day starts early with a drive to one of the park’s four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo. After a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you’ll be grouped (maximum 8 trekkers per gorilla family) and assigned a gorilla group to visit. Follow your expert guide and trackers who know the gorillas’ movements intimately.
    • The Trek Trekking through Bwindi is a true adventure. The terrain is rugged—expect steep hills, muddy trails, tangled vines, and towering ferns—but the rewards are beyond compare. Along the way, you’ll hear the calls of exotic birds, see rare forest plants, and maybe even encounter other primates like L’Hoest’s monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, or forest elephants. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorilla family’s location. The pace is unhurried, allowing you to take in the breathtaking atmosphere of this ancient rainforest.
    • The Encounter Suddenly, the guide signals silence. You’ve found them.In a sun-dappled clearing or amidst thick foliage, you’ll meet a mountain gorilla family—led by a powerful silverback. For one magical hour, you’ll witness their world up close: a mother cuddling her infant, juveniles tumbling and playing, or the dominant male peacefully watching over his troop.Gorillas share 98% of our DNA, and their human-like expressions, social interactions, and deep brown eyes create an emotional connection that leaves many visitors speechless. Cameras click softly, hearts race, and time seems to stand still.
    • After the Trek Once your hour is over, you quietly retreat, leaving the gorillas to their peaceful lives. At the briefing center, you’ll receive a certificate of participation, marking your successful trek—a badge of conservation and adventure.
