Gorilla Trekking Experience

The experience starts early in the morning at the park headquarters with a briefing from rangers. Visitors are assigned to a specific gorilla family and a tracking group. Each group is led by trained rangers and trackers who move ahead to locate the gorillas before guiding visitors into the forest.
The trek itself involves walking through thick vegetation, navigating slopes, and following forest trails. The duration varies depending on where the gorilla family settled the previous night. Some treks are short and straightforward, while others require several hours of hiking.
When the gorillas are located, visitors spend one hour observing them at a safe distance. During this time, you will see the structure of the group—dominant silverbacks, females with infants, and younger gorillas interacting. The experience is quiet and controlled, allowing natural behavior without disturbance.
Where to Go for Gorilla Trekking
Uganda
- Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Bwindi holds nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas and offers the highest number of trekking permits.- Buhoma Sector – Northern section with easier trails, well-developed lodges, and access to community visits
- Ruhija Sector – Higher altitude area with cooler temperatures and opportunities for birdwatching
- Rushaga Sector – Largest number of gorilla families and location for the Gorilla Habituation Experience
- Nkuringo Sector – Steeper terrain with wide views over the forest and surrounding mountains
- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Smaller park within the Virunga range, offering quieter treks and the option to combine with golden monkey tracking.
Rwanda
- Volcanoes National Park
Known for shorter travel time from Kigali and clear trekking organization, set against volcanic landscapes.
Democratic Republic of Congo
- Virunga National Park
Offers the lowest permit cost and a more remote experience, often combined with volcano hiking.
Gorilla Habituation Experience (Extended Option)
Within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park—specifically the Rushaga sector—there is an extended version of gorilla trekking known as the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Instead of visiting a fully habituated gorilla family, you join researchers and trackers working with a semi-habituated group that is still getting used to human presence.
Key differences:
- Up to 4 hours with the gorillas instead of 1 hour
- Smaller groups (maximum 4 visitors)
- More time to observe behavior, movement, and group interactions
- Less predictable encounters, as the gorillas are not fully accustomed to visitors
This option is suited for travelers who want deeper insight into gorilla behavior and conservation work.
Why Gorilla Trekking Matters
Gorilla trekking is directly linked to conservation and local livelihoods:
- Permit revenue supports protection of mountain gorillas
- Funds are allocated to park management and ranger operations
- Local communities benefit through employment and revenue-sharing programs
This system has contributed to the gradual increase in mountain gorilla populations over recent years.
