Chimpanzee Tracking Experience

Chimpanzee tracking is an engaging wildlife experience in East Africa. It takes place inside dense tropical forests where chimpanzees move freely in their natural habitat.

The experience begins early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers, who explain safety guidelines, group allocation, and what to expect during the trek.

Once inside the forest, trained trackers lead the group along established trails and off-trail sections. They locate chimpanzees by listening for loud calls, identifying fresh feeding remains, and following footprints or broken vegetation. The search can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on the location of the troop that day.

When the chimpanzees are found, visitors are allowed one hour in their presence. During this time, you observe their daily behavior up close—feeding, grooming, resting, and moving through the forest canopy.

Chimpanzees are highly active and vocal, which makes the experience dynamic compared to other primate encounters. It is common to see them jumping between trees, interacting in groups, or communicating through loud calls.

Best Time to Visit

Chimpanzee tracking is available throughout the year. The drier months—June to October and December to February—offer easier hiking conditions, with less mud and clearer forest trails. During wetter months, the forest is more lush, but trails can be slippery and tracking may take longer.

This experience fits well into multi-country safaris, especially when combined with gorilla trekking, big five and other wildlife activities across East Africa.
