Uganda

10 Tours

Primate Capital, Big Game Encounters & Adventure Landscapes. Uganda is one of the few destinations in Africa where a single itinerary can include gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, Big Five viewing, rare species encounters, and high-altitude hiking without long travel distances. The country’s network of parks is closely connected by road, allowing for flexible and efficient safari planning.

Gorilla Trekking at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas across over 20 habituated families. Trekking is conducted in small groups with experienced trackers, and sightings are highly consistent due to long-term habituation programs.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Offers gorilla trekking alongside golden monkey tracking within the Virunga volcanic chain, connecting Uganda’s wildlife directly to the Rwanda border region.

Chimpanzee tracking at Kibale National Park,

where tracking success rates regularly exceed 99%. The park also supports 12 other primate species, making it one of Africa’s richest primate ecosystems. Additional chimpanzee encounters are available in Kyambura Gorge, a dramatic forested trench within Queen Elizabeth National Park, where forest primates exist alongside classic savannah wildlife.

Savannah Parks & Rare Species

Uganda’s savannah parks are defined by water systems that concentrate wildlife.

Queen Elizabeth National Park,

The Kazinga Channel consistently holds one of the highest densities of hippos in Africa, alongside crocodiles, elephants, and buffalo, all viewable during boat safaris that bring wildlife within close proximity.

 Murchison Falls National Park

Centered around the Nile River, where the river is forced through a narrow gorge before plunging into a powerful waterfall. This natural bottleneck creates reliable wildlife concentrations, particularly along the riverbanks, where elephants, giraffes, and large predators are regularly observed.

Rhino Conservation & Specialized Encounters

Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is the only place in Uganda where rhinos can be tracked on foot. The sanctuary is part of the country’s rhino reintroduction program, allowing visitors to observe white rhinos at close range under guided conditions while contributing directly to conservation efforts.

Wetlands & Rare Bird Species

Mabamba Swamp near Lake Victoria is one of the most important birding sites in Africa and the most reliable location to see the shoebill stork, one of the continent’s most sought-after birds. Sightings are typically conducted by canoe, navigating papyrus channels early in the morning when the bird is most active.

 Lake Mburo National Park

Offers a different wildlife composition compared to other parks. It is the only park in Uganda where visitors can walk, cycle, or ride horses among wildlife, with species such as zebras, impalas, elands, and topis commonly seen. The park’s lake system also supports hippos and crocodiles, while its open landscapes provide clear photographic conditions.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Located in Uganda’s far northeast, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. This park is widely recognized for its isolation and dramatic landscapes. It supports large populations of buffalo and elephants, as well as predators such as lions and cheetahs. The Narus Valley provides reliable game viewing due to permanent water sources, while the wider park remains one of the least disturbed ecosystems in East Africa.

Hiking & Mountain Destinations

Rwenzori Mountains National Park,

Known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” multi-day treks lead to Africa’s third-highest peak, Mount Stanley, with glaciers, alpine vegetation, and challenging terrain requiring technical preparation. This range is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers one of the most demanding hikes on the continent.

Mount Elgon National Park

A less technical but equally scenic hiking experience. The park features one of the world’s largest calderas, extensive cave systems, waterfalls, and high-altitude trails suitable for multi-day trekking without technical climbing requirements.

Water, Culture & Adventure

Uganda’s positioning along the Nile creates additional activity opportunities. In Jinja, the river emerges from Lake Victoria, supporting world-class white-water rafting (Grade 4–5), kayaking, and boat excursions. This combination of wildlife, primates, and adventure sports is unique to Uganda within East Africa.

Why Uganda Works as a Safari Destination

Uganda combines:

  • High-density primate tracking (gorillas and chimpanzees in one itinerary)
  • Reliable water-based wildlife viewing (Kazinga Channel, River Nile)
  • Rare species encounters (shoebill, tree-climbing lions, rhinos)
  • Remote wilderness options (Kidepo Valley)
  • Hiking diversity (Rwenzori, Elgon, volcanic ranges)
